3. Give your application to the LTB
Question & Answer
What if I already paid an illegal charge or rent increase? When your form is completed, you have to it with the (LTB).
There is a filing fee of $53, or $48 if you file online. But, if you are on social assistance or other low income, you can ask the LTB not to charge you the fee. To do this, you have to fill out a “Fee Waiver Request” form. You can ask the LTB to send you this form, or you can download it from the LTB's website. If you file online, you can ask for a fee waiver in the step that asks you to pay for the application.
You can file your application in person at many ServiceOntario Centres. You can pay the filing fee by cash, credit card, debit card, certified cheque or money order. Certified cheques and money orders must be made payable to the Minister of Finance. The LTB will not accept an ordinary uncertified cheque.
You can mail your application to the closest LTB office. If you're paying by credit card, you must complete and include a Credit Card Payment Form.
You can also file your application online using the Tribunals Ontario Portal. To pay the fee, you will need to give the LTB your credit card or debit card information. Make sure you see confirmation on your screen that the LTB has received your application.
You can fax your application to 1-833-610-2242 or (416) 326-6455. You can only use fax if you have a fee waiver and would have trouble filing the application in any other way.
After you file your application, the LTB will schedule a hearing and send you a Notice of Hearing package. The package has a copy of your application and information about the time and place of the hearing. Most hearings are held by Zoom. The LTB will also send a copy of this package to your landlord.
It's important to be fully prepared for your hearing so you should start as soon as possible. You only get one chance to tell your side of the story. The LTB will make a decision based on what you and your landlord say at the hearing. In most cases, after the hearing has happened, you won't be able to send in that you missed or ask for a second hearing.
