3. Apply for a TRP
To apply for a (TRP), you need to:
- complete the application forms through Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC)’s online portal
- collect the required documents
- explain your reasons for entering Canada
- include that supports why you want to enter
When you're outside Canada, you must apply for a TRP before you try to enter Canada.
But applying for a TRP alone is not enough for you to be able to enter Canada. You must also apply for a status, such as a study permit, work permit, Temporary Resident Visa (TRV) or an Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA).
Where to apply
You can apply for a TRP and a TRV from your home country through IRCC’s online portal. You may also be able to apply at a Canadian embassy or consulate.
You may have to go to an interview with an officer from IRCC in your home country. The IRCC officer will ask you questions about your application.
Fees
To apply for a TRP, you must pay $200 (Canadian). IRCC only accepts online payments.
You also have to pay for biometrics. Biometrics cost $85 for one person. The cost for a family is $170. A family is 2 or more people. You need to do biometrics only once every 10 years or when IRCC asks you to.
You don't get this money back if you don't get a TRP.
You don't have to pay a fee to apply for a TRP if you have applied to become a and you're waiting for a decision. And there may be other reasons why you may not have to pay to apply for a TRP.
Citizens and permanent residents of the United States
If you're a citizen or permanent resident of the United States, you can apply for a TRP at a border crossing between the United States and Canada. But you should have your completed TRP application ready when you arrive.
If you're a resident of the United States and are criminally inadmissible to Canada, there are specific forms that you must include with your application.
How long the application process takes
It can take a long time to find out if your application for a TRP is accepted. If you submit your application at a visa office outside of Canada, it can take several months or even years to get a decision. Each visa office has their own processing times.
If you submit your application at a border crossing between the United States and Canada, a Canadian immigration officer decides about your application. That can happen on the same day.
