party

A party or parties are the people or organizations directly involved in a court case, contract, agreement, or other legal matter. For example, a party can be one person or a group of 2 or more people, a corporation, or a government organization like the Ministry of Labour.

pay in lieu of notice

When an employer fires you or lays you off, they usually have to give you notice ahead of time. The amount of time can depend on many things including how long you’ve been in the job.

If they let you go right away, they must pay you the money you’d have earned if they had told you ahead of time. This is called pay in lieu of notice or termination pay.

payday loan

A payday loan is a short-term loan (usually 3 weeks or less) that has a very high interest rate. The interest rate on a payday loan is usually much higher than the interest rates charged by credit cards or bank loans. You cannot get a payday loan for more than $1,500. You will usually have to give the payday lender post-dated cheques that they can cash on the loan due date to repay the loan and the interest.

peace bond

A peace bond is a court order from a criminal court that requires a person to “keep the peace and be of good behaviour”. The peace bond may also contain other conditions the person must follow. For example, the person may be required to follow a “no contact” condition.

A pension is a type of regular payment a person gets. Usually, someone gets a pension because they are retired or disabled. Pensions are paid by organizations like the government, a person’s previous employer, or from personal investments. Pensions are a type of income.

pension plan administrator

A pension plan administrator is a person or a group of people, who manage a pension fund. They are responsible for many things, including giving plan members certain information and making pension payments to them.

A pension plan brochure or annual pension statement usually has contact information for its pension plan administrator.

period

In Housing Law

A length of time that repeats over and over. A periodic tenancy is a tenancy that repeats or renews after each period until the landlord or the tenant does something to end it. It does not have a fixed term. The most common types are weekly and monthly tenancies.

perjury

Perjury is the criminal offence of lying when questioned under oath in court or when making a sworn statement.

permanent resident

A permanent resident is an immigrant or refugee who has been given the right to live permanently in Canada. A permanent resident is not a Canadian citizen. Permanent residents can be forced to leave Canada for reasons given in the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act.
