loan agreement

In Debt and Consumer Rights

A loan agreement is a contract between a lender and a borrower, usually in writing. The lender agrees to give money to the borrower, and the borrower promises to pay the money back to the lender. The agreement includes the terms, which means it says what each person promises to do. For example, it says how much money the lender gives, when and how the borrower should repay the loan, the interest rate, and what happens if the borrower does not repay the loan.

local resolution

In Criminal Law

Local resolution is a way for you to resolve minor complaints involving the police. With local resolution, you work directly with the police to deal with your complaint. Complaints dealt with through local resolution are not considered official complaints.

lockdown

In Criminal Law

When a correctional facility is on lockdown, it means that prisoners must stay in their cells. Lockdowns can happen during an emergency, or as a result of staff shortages or riots.

long-term care home

In Elder abuse

In Ontario, long-term care homes are licensed places where adults live when they need:

  • access to nursing care and personal care that’s on site and available 24 hours a day
  • help with most or all daily activities, for example, eating, bathing, and using the toilet

They’re sometimes called nursing homes, charitable homes, or municipal homes for the aged.

Residents in long-term care homes pay for their room and board. The provincial government sets the fees and they’re the same in for-profit and not-for-profit homes. The government pays the cost of residents’ health care. Residents have to pay for extra services, such as hairdressing, dental care, and private personal support workers.

LTB member

In Housing Law

Members of the Landlord and Tenant Board (LTB) make decisions about issues that are covered by the Residential Tenancies Act. They’re in charge at LTB hearings. Their role is like that of a judge in a court. An LTB member is sometimes called an adjudicator.

lump-sum payment

In Debt and Consumer Rights

A lump-sum payment is when you pay something in one single payment, instead of paying in many smaller payments over a period of time. For example, if you repay your entire car loan at once instead of making monthly payments, it is a lump sum payment.

making money from trafficking in persons

In Criminal Law

It is an indictable offence to make money from trafficking people. Trafficking in persons means recruiting, transporting, concealing, or controlling the movements of a person, to exploit (use, or take advantage of) them or to help someone else exploit them.

Exploitation can happen if a person provides labour or a service because they reasonably think that their safety, or the safety of a person they know, would be at risk if they do not.

Mandatory Information Program

In Family Law

The Mandatory Information Program (MIP) is a program for partners who are separating or divorcing. It gives them information about:

  • family law issues
  • the family court process
  • how separation and divorce affects adults and children
  • ways to solve issues without going to court
  • local resources and programs

In most situations, both partners must attend an MIP before their court case can move forward.

The MIP is available at all family court locations across Ontario.

marriage contract

In Family Law

A marriage contract, sometimes called a domestic contract, is a written contract that partners can make that says how they will deal with their issues while they are married, at the end of the marriage, or if one of them dies. They can make this kind of contract before they marry if they plan to marry, or after getting married. For example, a marriage contract can say how much spousal support one partner will pay the other if they separate. It cannot say who will have custody or access to any children.

married

In Wills and Powers of Attorney

To be married or to have a marriage means that 2 people had a marriage ceremony with someone that has the legal power to marry them.

A marriage ends only by divorce, annulment, or the death of one of the partners.

Being separated is not the same as being divorced.
